Applications and differences
Properties of aluminium foil compared to PET-MET:
When it comes to food packaging, food packaged purely in aluminium is a rarity. Instead, PET-MET can clearly demonstrate its advantages here. Nevertheless, there are classic foods packaged purely in aluminium, such as chocolate.

Advantages:
From approx. 12-20 ยต, aluminium foil has barrier properties, which makes it impermeable to water and gases. If the foils are thinner, this protection can no longer be fully guaranteed. Another advantage of aluminium is that it can be deformed without compromising its barrier properties.
Aluminium foil is impermeable to gas, light, grease and water. It does not become statically charged and reflects light, heat and UV rays.
Disadvantages:
Aluminium foil is physiologically harmless to food. However, acidic, alkaline and salty foods should not come into contact with the aluminium foil. Although aluminium foil is harmless as a packaging solution for food, acidic, alkaline or salty foods are difficult to use in aluminium as pure packaging.

PET-MET functional and visually attractive
PET-MET can fully exploit its advantages over aluminium foil when it comes to gloss level, as the metallised PET film achieves a strong mirror effect. This advantage is utilised in printing, for example. If the printing colour is yellow, it shimmers gold when printed on PET-MET. If a white primer is used, this effect is removed from the material.
PET-MET provides the necessary protection and barrier function with an attractive appearance. For example, chip bags are usually produced from PET-MET. However, it must also be considered that the protective function is lower compared to aluminium foil and that shelf lives are therefore shorter.

Aluminium or PET-MET?
In addition to the price advantage that PET-MET offers over aluminium, it should be borne in mind that aluminium foil is always more suitable where greater gas-tightness and light impermeability are required.
PET-MET is particularly suitable as a replacement for aluminium foil for acidic, alkaline or salty foods, as aluminium foil releases aluminium from these foods over time and over the contact surface.
PET-MET is one of the ideal materials for building insulation and is increasingly replacing pure aluminium foil.
